Chicago’s Jewish Architects: A Legacy of Modernism

Birthplace of the skyscraper, Chicago played an important role in the development of
architectural Modernism. This great legacy includes the contributions of many Jewish architects,
some now famous and others who have long been overlooked. In this presentation Julia Bachrach
will highlight the work of Chicago Jewish architects from the 1890s through the 1970s.

Julia S. Bachrach is a historian, author, and preservation planning consultant. Her books include The City in a Garden: A History of Chicago’s Parks and Inspired by Nature: The Garfield Park Conservatory and Chicago’s West Side. She contributed to the AIA Guide to Chicago Architecture and Art Deco Chicago: Making Modern America (forthcoming).
