Esther was born on Chicago’s West Side, the daughter of Holocaust
survivors. A graduate of Mather High School and Grinnell College, she holds master’s degrees in education policy and leadership from Harvard University and the University of Illinois Chicago. She has extensive experience as a writer and editor, having developed educational materials in the U.S. and a range of topics for international publications. Most recently she has developed curriculum guides for teachers working with English language learners. Esther spent years traveling and living abroad and was an active member of the Jewish community in Havana, Cuba, during the 1980s. Her children’s professional choices reflect major interests and commitments in her own life: Her daughter has directed art galleries in New York and Los Angeles, and her son has worked as an organizer for political organizations. Another important commitment was her study of Biblical Hebrew with Rabbi Dr. Bernard Grossfeld – an opportunity she considers one of the honors of her life. Esther resides in Chicago’s Rogers Park. She came to CJHS through a high school friendship with Co-President Dr. Rachelle Gold.
